# What Actually Happens on a Friday Night

Seven o'clock, a table in Manhattan, and the book of Revelation. A plain description, for anyone deciding whether to come.

If you have never been to a Messianic synagogue on a Friday evening, the honest problem is that you cannot picture it. You do not know what people wear, whether you will be asked to say anything, whether there is a part where everyone knows the words except you. That uncertainty stops more people at the door than any question of theology ever has.

So here is the whole thing, plainly.

## Seven o'clock, and what that means

We gather at 7:00 PM on Friday at our meeting location on East 61st Street. Friday evening is when Shabbat begins — not Saturday morning, which surprises people. The Jewish day starts at sundown, so the week's rest opens in the dark and runs through to the following evening.

People arrive over about fifteen minutes. Nobody is timing you.

## There is food, and it is not a meal

We call it light Shabbat refreshments, and we mean it literally — something to eat standing up or around a table, not a dinner service. It is there so people talk to each other before anything formal begins, which is the actual purpose.

You do not need to bring anything. If you want to, ask first, because some weeks there is already too much.

## Then prayer, then the Word

We welcome the Shabbat together with prayer, some of it in Hebrew, all of it explained. Then we open the Scriptures and study.

At the moment we are working through the book of Revelation. Not as a puzzle to be decoded or a calendar to be worked out, but as the letter it was written as, to congregations that were under real pressure at the time.

> Questions are not tolerated in the study. They are what the study is made of.

If you have a question, ask it. If you disagree, say so. A room where nobody pushes back is not studying, it is listening to one person talk.

## What nobody expects of you

- You do not need to know Hebrew. Nobody will hand you something to read aloud.
- You do not need a head covering, though you are welcome to wear one.
- You do not need to be Jewish. A good part of the room is not.
- You do not need to have read anything beforehand.
- You do not need to give anything. There is no plate passed round.

## How long, and then what

Roughly two hours. Some people leave promptly, some stay talking for another forty minutes. Both are normal.

If you would rather come to a bigger, more formal gathering first, Shabbat Morning is Saturday at 11:00 AM — liturgy, modern worship, the Torah reading and teaching. Some people find the Friday evening easier to walk into precisely because it is smaller. Others prefer to arrive somewhere they can sit at the back.

Either door is open. You do not have to tell anyone you are coming.

## Come and see for yourself

Shabbat Night is Friday at 7:00 PM and Shabbat Morning is Saturday at 11:00 AM, in person at 250 E 61st St, New York, NY 10065. No registration, and nothing you need to know beforehand — everything is explained as we go.
