No.

That is the whole answer, and everything below is only an explanation of why it is not a more complicated one.

## What we actually are

Upper Room NYC is a community of Jewish people and people from the nations, gathered around the conviction that Yeshua of Nazareth is the Messiah promised in the Torah, the Prophets and the Writings. Both halves of that sentence are load-bearing. We are recognisably Jewish in how we gather — Shabbat, the feasts, the weekly Torah portion, Hebrew alongside English — and we read the New Testament as Scripture.

Our statement of faith puts the matter plainly: the Body of Messiah is one spiritual family made up of Jewish and non-Jewish followers of Yeshua, united through Him, while the distinct identities and callings of each are honoured rather than flattened.

> Gentiles are not asked to become Jewish. Jewish people are not asked to stop being Jewish.

That single sentence resolves most of what people are actually worried about when they ask the question.

## What that looks like on a Saturday morning

You will sit in a room where some people have kept Shabbat their whole lives and some are working out what the prayers mean for the first time. Nobody is sorted into categories at the door. There is no membership tier that depends on ancestry.

Hebrew is used, and it is always explained. Nobody will hand you something to read aloud in a language you do not have. If you would rather watch the first few weeks and say nothing, that is a completely normal way to arrive.

## The question underneath the question

Most people asking this are asking one of two other things.

Some are Jewish, and want to know whether coming here means giving something up. It does not. We hold that God's covenant purposes for Israel remain in force and that His calling of the Jewish people has not been revoked. A Jewish person who comes to faith in Yeshua has not left anything behind — Yeshua is a Jewish Messiah, and the first community that followed Him was entirely Jewish.

Some are not Jewish, and want to know whether they are a guest here. You are not. You are not being tolerated at the edge of somebody else's tradition. The nations being brought in is not a concession in the Hebrew Scriptures; it is one of the promises.

## What is asked of you

Nothing at the door. Come, sit, listen, ask questions afterwards.

Over time, the same things that would be asked of anyone in a congregation: honesty, a willingness to be known, and a readiness to take the Scriptures seriously enough to let them argue back.

If you want the longer version of what we hold, it is written out on our statement of faith. If you would rather see it than read about it, the door is open Friday evening and Saturday morning.

## Come and see for yourself

Shabbat Night is Friday at 7:00 PM and Shabbat Morning is Saturday at 11:00 AM, in person at 250 E 61st St, New York, NY 10065. No registration, and nothing you need to know beforehand — everything is explained as we go.
